The nice thing about spending a night in the centre of a reasonable sized town rather than out in the boonies, is the possibility of being able to source a good veggie breakfast. Turns out that the Blue Scorcher Cafe is about 200 yards from the hotel and has a very tempeh-heavy menu. Score. A tempeh Reuben sandwich and a stiff coffee later and I am ready to hit the road. I like the fact that the guy serving me started to ask how I would like my coffee and then just assumed that I would go with the strongest option. He is obviously a good judge of character. Or alternatively I look terrible an in need of a lift…
Anyway, it seems to have done the job as my reactions seem sharp when a mother and baby deer wander out in front of me. Reflexes active. Tick.
Now several years ago, on a trip to Scotland, I visited Dull. Dull is paired with Boring, Oregon so clearly I had to go to the other end of the wormhole for the photo op.
I gather that they are looking to hook up with Bland, Australia. That’s a whole other trip!
Can’t believe I am going to miss Boring and Dull day…
Oh well, I’m sure I can find nothing to do.
Whilst I was photographing the sign, some guy who was just pulling out of the parking lot, towing a car, started chatting to me and we had a pleasant conversation about Football, England and Oregon tourist highlights for 10 minutes. This is something you never see in the UK: someone taking time out of their day just to be friendly to a stranger. Got to admire that.
That said, he bowled me a googlie recommending Multnomah Falls. I had been planning to go there but, it being quite close by, I thought I would head there straight away. Of course he had failed to mention the timed pass system!. Suitably booked in through recreation.gov (having data makes such a difference!) I shall be returning tomorrow.
So on to the next exciting attraction: the North American Bigfoot Centre. Yes, I am still on the trail of the Squatch! Quite interesting and informative, but not as much as the conversation in Forks. Interestingly, the guy in the video is who I was chatting to in Forks.
Given the geographical challenges of covering Mount Hood and the Columbia Gorge, I decide that I will do Columbia Gorge (and the falls) tomorrow and then potter around Mount Hood on my last full day. Time to head to the hotel that I am staying at for my last 3 nights in the somewhat dystopian sounding town of Government Camp.
I will need to do some research to fully plan out the remaining days. It strikes me that this will be best achieved over beer and handily, the Mt. Hood Brewing Co. is right next door to the hotel…
Ah yes, I think that will help.
